There are not enough articles about Wall Climbs and how to do them properly, which I am going to demonstrate to you in this post.
First, have your gymnast stand with their back close to a padded wall. It is extremely important to have a determined gymnast. This is the key, to have a determined person do what you tell them to. They should trust you as well. Next, make sure that your wall is padded extremely well. This will prevent any injuries.
After you have done that step you will tell them to place their hands on the mat. If is preferred that you have a mat, if you do not they can put their hands on the floor approximately 2 feet from the wall.
Once that is done, you will want to make sure that the gymnast is durable and strong enough in that position. If not, it is bad times ahead.
Now, it gets tougher. Instruct the person to simultaneously walk their hands in towards the wall and their feet up the wall towards the ceiling just until their forehead touches the wall and their shoulders touch their ears.
While they are keeping their arms straight, you have two options. The first option is to have them walk back out, while remaining very tight. The second option is to allow them to roll out and then slide their feet back down the wall.
Once this part is mastered, they are going to want to perform shoulder shrugs in the handstand position. Do this before rolling or walking back out.
Remember, take plenty of precautions. The mat must be secured against the wall and the gymnast, who is probably not that experienced, must be spotted in order to prevent falling into an arched position against the wall.
With a new gymnast, or an inexperienced one, you will want to first evaluate their determination and physical fitness. Usually, if they are wanting to do wall climbs or something similar then they are physically fit, but are they determined? In my experience, not always. I have came upon a couple of people who gave in very easily. Those types of people are ones I never, ever want to work with. They have some sort of issues that they need to solve in their mind. Will power and determination makes you able to achieve nearly anything you want to achieve. These are the types of characteristics I look for in a gymnast.
If you can a gymnast that is determined, wants to achieve the best that they can and are capable, you have a winner.
